Hello Matt. I confess I can't think of any specific research into this right now. I have read some in the past but it was quite a while ago, I'll see if I can find it. However it's very well known phenomena for people to 'pull together in times of need', be it a disaster or situation like a war.

Our main clients from Sony Ericsson were in Thailand with their families when the tsunami happened. They came and did an extensive presentation about it to our company and described how they stayed there and helped coordinate rescue efforts. They started a (Swedish) charity to raise money for the damaged communities and my company built their site:

Thank you for today's presentation. You mentioned briefly the impact of groups during times of tragedy or need. Are you aware of any research conducted following the recent tsunami or hurricanes in the Gulf Coast? Specifically, how goups of people used the Web to respond to those in need. Thank you again, it's inspiring to know others are thinking about the ethics of new technologies.
